Carbon Neutrality Commitment Across All Three Scopes by 2028
Coverage of the Carbon Neutrality Target
The 2028 commitment extends across the University’s operations and value chain, using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol scope definitions.
|
Scope |
Coverage of the commitment |
Main action areas |
|
Scope 1 |
Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the University. |
Fuel reduction, vehicle electrification, efficient heating and cooling, and refrigerant management. |
|
Scope 2 |
Indirect emissions from purchased or acquired electricity, steam, heating and cooling, where applicable. |
Renewable-energy supply, energy efficiency and continued monitoring of purchased energy. |
|
Scope 3 Full |
All applicable upstream and downstream indirect-emission categories within the University’s value chain. |
Sustainable procurement, capital investment, travel and commuting, transport, waste, purchased services and other applicable value-chain activities. |
The commitment brings direct operations, energy supply and value-chain emissions within a single institutional carbon-neutrality target.
Progress Reported in 2025
The Carbon Footprint Report 2024–2025 documents progress against the University’s 2019 baseline.
|
Emissions category |
2025 reported emissions |
|
Scope 1 |
239.07 tCO₂e |
|
Scope 2 |
0 tCO₂e |
|
Scope 3 |
142.23 tCO₂e |
|
Total reported emissions |
381.30 tCO₂e |
Total reported emissions were 93.4% below the 2019 baseline of 5,774.139 tCO₂e. Scope 2 emissions remained at zero, while continued action addresses remaining direct and value-chain emissions toward the 2028 target.
Implementing the Commitment
ANNU’s carbon-reduction pathway combines operational improvements with engagement across its value chain.
Energy efficiency and renewable energy: The University pursues efficient lighting, equipment upgrades, improved building performance and renewable-electricity development through its Energy Efficiency Plan 2024–2028.
Transport and mobility: The pathway includes vehicle electrification, support for shared transport, walking and cycling, and digital alternatives that reduce travel demand.
Procurement and resource management: Green purchasing, waste prevention, recycling, composting and digital administration support reductions in indirect emissions associated with goods, services and resource use.
Buildings and infrastructure: Efficient design and renovation measures address energy and water performance and support lower-carbon university development.
Education and participation: Climate education, awareness activities and staff and student engagement support implementation across the institution.
These measures are coordinated within the Greenhouse Gas Emission Management and Reduction Program.
Monitoring and Public Accountability
The Sustainability Office coordinates greenhouse gas reporting with relevant university departments. Annual assessment supports progress tracking, prioritisation of reduction measures and review of the pathway toward carbon neutrality.
ANNU publishes its emissions results and supporting documents through the Carbon Emissions Reporting page, making progress toward its 2028 commitment publicly accessible.
