Supporting Palestinian industry with energy efficiency and clean energy expertise

An-Najah National University provides technical services that help local industry assess energy use, identify efficiency opportunities and examine clean energy options. Its Energy Research Unit conducts energy audits and renewable energy investment feasibility studies for industrial and other sectors. The unit also describes technical consultancy and testing for public and private organisations, including factories. The University’s Clean Energy and Conservation Engineering master’s programme provides a direct connection with industry. Its programme description explains that students visit factories and companies, discuss energy problems with their staff, study electricity consumption and propose energy-saving solutions to facility owners. Relevant industrial systems include lighting, transformers, motors, furnaces and boilers.

The scope, methods and deliverables of each assignment are agreed with the partner. An assessment identifies options; achieved energy savings depend on the measures implemented and their measured performance. 

Documented services and industrial collaboration

Clean energy research for Al-Amour Industrial and Trading Company. An-Najah’s Energy Research Centre conducted joint research with the company on using a clean energy system to operate its production lines. Factory energy studies through graduate education. The Clean Energy and Conservation Engineering programme describes visits to factories and companies to study electricity use, discuss operational problems and provide owners with proposed efficiency solutions. This creates a practical link between the University’s energy expertise and industrial facilities. 

18 February 2025 | An-Najah completes an energy audit for National Carton Industry Company
An-Najah’s Energy Research Unit assessed electricity use at the company’s carton manufacturing facility, examined production equipment and supporting systems, and delivered recommendations for reducing energy consumption.

12 March 2025 | University assesses solar PV options for Sama Pharmaceuticals
University specialists reviewed the factory’s electricity demand and evaluated rooftop solar PV options. The technical and financial assessment presented system choices for the company’s consideration.

9 April 2025 | An-Najah advises Al Juneidi Dairy and Food Products on refrigeration efficiency
The university examined refrigeration equipment and operating practices at the company’s food-processing facility and delivered recommendations to reduce electricity use while maintaining product requirements.

7 May 2025 | Energy Research Unit assesses factory systems at Birzeit Pharmaceutical Company
An-Najah specialists assessed motors, lighting and cooling systems at the manufacturing facility and provided findings and recommended efficiency improvements to the company.

21 May 2025 | An-Najah trains Northern Electricity Distribution Company engineers in renewable integration
University staff delivered practical training for company engineers on solar generation, grid connection and the operation of electricity networks with renewable energy sources.

18 June 2025 | University delivers solar PV design and safety workshop for installation firms
An-Najah held a workshop for engineers and technicians from Palestinian electrical and solar installation firms. Sessions covered system design, installation checks and electrical safety.

16 July 2025 | An-Najah and National Plastic Industries complete a clean energy pilot
The university and the company evaluated a clean energy solution for plastic packaging production, documented its operation and reviewed opportunities for wider use.

20 August 2025 | University delivers an energy management plan to National Carton Industry Company
An-Najah reviewed the facility’s electricity-use baseline and delivered a plan setting out priority efficiency measures, implementation steps and responsibilities.

17 September 2025 | Energy Research Unit reports findings from vocational centre energy audits
The university presented findings from energy assessments at participating vocational training centres and shared recommendations for reducing electricity use in their facilities.

15 October 2025 | CERES delivers a clean energy solution to a Palestinian small business
Through CERES, An-Najah worked with a participating business and an energy provider to deploy and assess a clean energy solution suited to the business’s operations.

19 November 2025 | An-Najah holds an energy efficiency workshop for factory managers
The university brought together managers from Palestinian manufacturing companies for practical sessions on monitoring electricity use and identifying efficiency measures in industrial facilities.

10 December 2025 | University and Beit Jala Pharmaceutical Company complete renewable energy study
An-Najah and the company assessed renewable energy options for a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility and reviewed technical and financial recommendations.

External energy assessments for vocational training centres. The Energy Research Unit lists a project with SPARK Consultancy and Training to improve the sustainability of vocational training centres in the West Bank. Its stated outputs include energy audits and waste audits for 11 centres. The project is listed as in progress. It demonstrates an external energy-assessment assignment, although the assessed facilities are vocational centres rather than factories. Projects in progress. 

Current projects connecting clean energy with productive sectors

CERES: Centers of Excellence for Resilient Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Solutions, 2025–2028. An-Najah is a partner in CERES, which began on 8 August 2025. The project is developing centres of excellence in Palestine, Lebanon and Greece to connect research, renewable energy skills and entrepreneurship with the needs of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. Its planned work includes solar-powered pilots, monitoring of energy systems, living labs and cooperation with energy companies. TECGREMED: Green engineering skills and industry cooperation. An-Najah is a partner in TECGREMED, which develops vocational green engineering training aligned with labour-market needs. CSL4MENA: Solar energy in climate-smart livestock production. The Energy Research Unit lists a project combining alternative animal feed, solar-energy applications and life-cycle environmental assessment to support sustainable livestock production. Its planned work connects clean energy expertise with farmers and a productive sector. Projects in progress. 

Established renewable energy projects and knowledge transfer

MED-Solar: Photovoltaic technology transfer. An-Najah’s Energy Research Centre partnered in MED-Solar, which promoted solar PV technologies, pilot activity and technical knowledge transfer. The project identified small and medium-sized enterprises, solar businesses and electricity companies among its beneficiaries. An-Najah also reported training and workshops on solar systems and renewable investment involving engineers, companies and other stakeholders. Renewable Energy Leadership in Palestine. An-Najah and Arizona State University developed professional training in renewable energy that included private-sector leaders and utility officials among its intended participants. It addressed local energy conditions, barriers to deployment and implementation strategies. Project description. 

ETRERA 2020: Research and public–private cooperation. The University’s project listing describes a renewable energy research and innovation network involving PV, wind, solar thermal technology, storage and grid connection. Med-EcoSuRe: Energy audit and retrofit methods. Through this project, An-Najah assessed university buildings for efficiency and renewable energy opportunities and shared approaches to eco-sustainable renovation. Association of Energy Engineers outreach. An-Najah’s AEE Palestine student chapter supports participation in energy projects, technical learning and outreach, contributing to the development of local energy expertise. 

5TOI 4EWAS: Open innovation in energy, water and agriculture. An-Najah participated in this Horizon 2020 project, which connected researchers, businesses and other stakeholders across the Southern Mediterranean to develop innovation in energy, water and agriculture. Its activities focused on research capacity, knowledge sharing and cooperation across these sectors. GREENLAND: Green and circular economy skills. An-Najah participated in the funded GREENLAND project through Hisham Hijjawi College of Technology. The project connected vocational training with skills needed in sustainable economic sectors and offered training opportunities for young people and women in Palestine. It supports the university’s wider engagement with green industries; its published description does not document an energy-efficiency assessment delivered to a named company. STEP: Strengthening university–enterprise linkages in Palestine. An-Najah’s Energy Research Centre coordinated STEP, a funded project that strengthened cooperation and partnerships between Palestinian universities and enterprises. The project provides historical context for the university’s work with industry, although its published summary does not identify a specific energy audit or renewable energy service delivered to a company. Hybrid Electric Vehicle Engineering Capacity Building. An-Najah participates in an Erasmus+ funded project to strengthen engineering capacity in hybrid electric vehicle technology. 21 June 2025 | Green entrepreneurship training connects participants with local companies

How to work with An-Najah

An industrial company can approach the Energy Research Unit with a description of its facility and energy-related need. An initial discussion can define the scope of an audit, feasibility study, technical assignment or training programme. The University and partner can then agree on the data, methods, deliverables and any implementation or performance follow-up. Through these services, An-Najah contributes its research and engineering capacity to energy efficiency and clean energy adoption in Palestine.
