Measuring and Setting Targets for Sustainable Commuting

An-Najah National University measures how its students and staff travel to campus and sets clear, time-bound targets to increase the share of sustainable commuting. This work is coordinated by the University’s Sustainability Office as part of its Green Campus Plan.

How we measure

The University monitors commuting patterns across its campuses through regular travel surveys of students and staff and through ridership data from its shuttle bus service. Data is collected on all main modes of travel: walking, cycling, shuttle buses, public transport, carpooling, private cars and electric vehicles. The results are used to track progress against our targets, to plan shuttle routes and campus infrastructure, and to report on the University’s carbon emissions.

Our targets

  • Reduce single-occupancy private car use for commuting to campus by 50% by 2030.
  • Increase shuttle bus ridership by 50% by 2030.
  • Expand bicycle parking and cycling infrastructure across all campuses.
  • Expand electric vehicle charging stations on campus.
  • Introduce electric or hybrid shuttle buses as part of the shuttle fleet renewal.

How we support these targets

The University provides a free shuttle service connecting its campuses and residential areas, and reviews ridership data regularly to improve routes and timings. Campus layouts place essential facilities within short walking distance, supported by shaded walkways, pedestrian-only zones and accessibility features for persons with disabilities. The University also encourages carpooling, runs awareness campaigns on sustainable mobility, and works with local authorities to improve public transport connections to its campuses.

Progress against these targets is reviewed annually and reported in the University’s Sustainability Report.
