Prioritizing Pedestrian Access on Campus

An-Najah National University gives walking priority over all other modes of movement on its campuses. Guided by its Green Campus Plan, the University designs and manages its campuses so that walking is the safest, most convenient and most pleasant way to get around. This pedestrian-first approach reduces dependence on private vehicles, lowers carbon emissions, encourages physical activity and creates lively, welcoming spaces for study and social interaction.

Walkable campus design
On each of the University’s campuses, the main academic, administrative and service buildings are located within short walking distance of one another, making walking the quickest and easiest way to move between classes, libraries, laboratories and student services.

Separating pedestrians from vehicles
Pedestrian pathways are clearly separated from vehicle routes by curbs, distinctive paving and planted green barriers. Vehicle access within the campuses is limited, reducing conflicts between pedestrians and traffic and keeping campus users safe.

Car-free zones
Areas around building entrances, student centres, courtyards and plazas are designated as car-free zones, creating safe and quiet spaces where students, staff and visitors can walk, study, meet and relax.

Accessibility for all
Pedestrian routes are designed to be used by everyone, including persons with disabilities, elderly visitors and parents with strollers. Ramps, non-slip surfaces and wide pathways provide step-free access to buildings, and the University’s Disability Support Office works continuously to identify and remove remaining barriers.

Safe crossings
Zebra crossings and raised walkways at campus gates and internal road crossings give pedestrians priority and slow down vehicles, promoting a culture of safe and responsible mobility.

Shaded and comfortable walkways
Covered and shaded walkways, benches and rest areas protect campus users from summer heat and winter rain and allow them to rest along their routes, making walking comfortable throughout the year.

Green pathways
Walkways are lined with trees and landscaped green areas that provide shade, improve air quality, support biodiversity and make walking across campus a pleasant and restorative experience.

Safe walking after dark
Pedestrian routes are lit with energy-efficient lighting to ensure safety and visibility in the evening while keeping energy consumption low.

Najah2Twin digital campus map
The University’s interactive campus map, developed under the Najah2Twin initiative, helps students, staff and visitors find pedestrian routes, accessible entrances and rest areas, making it easier to move around campus on foot.

Through these measures, An-Najah National University promotes a pedestrian-first campus culture that supports health, inclusion and environmental sustainability, in line with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
